Jesse Minter Named New Head Coach of the Baltimore Ravens

The Baltimore Ravens have tapped Jesse Minter as their new head coach, following the departure of John Harbaugh earlier this month after an 18-year tenure. The move signals a new era for the Ravens as they seek to return to playoff contention.

The Ravens swiftly turned to Minter, the defensive coordinator for the Los Angeles Chargers, to replace Harbaugh, whose dismissal came after the team failed to qualify for the postseason. Harbaugh has since accepted the head coaching position with the New York Giants.

At 42 years old, Minter quickly emerged as a highly sought-after candidate during the coaching search. He engaged in virtual interviews with multiple teams, including the Pittsburgh Steelers, who are also navigating a head coaching vacancy following Mike Tomlin’s recent departure. Ultimately, Minter chose Baltimore, where his primary objective will be to elevate the career of two-time MVP quarterback Lamar Jackson, who has faced consistent challenges in the postseason. “This is an organization whose values, culture and tradition of excellence reflect everything I believe about the game of football and how it should be played,” Minter stated.

Minter’s coaching journey includes two seasons with the Chargers and a prior two-year stint as defensive coordinator at the University of Michigan. His successful collaborations with Jim Harbaugh at both institutions were instrumental in building a strong resume that positioned him to succeed Harbaugh’s brother in Baltimore.

Ravens General Manager Eric DeCosta expressed confidence in Minter’s leadership, stating, “Jesse is a strong leader who possesses a brilliant football mind and a spirit that will resonate with our players and fanbase alike. Jesse comes from a football family, with success at every level of the sport, and we are confident that he is the right coach to lead the Ravens forward.”

The Chargers, under Minter’s guidance, finished fifth in the league in total defense this season, conceding an average of 285.2 yards per game. Notably, they allowed a league-low 17.7 points per game in 2024. The University of Michigan, during Minter’s tenure, led the nation in total defense in 2023, culminating in a College Football Playoff national championship victory.

Minter is also familiar with the Ravens organization, having spent four seasons (2017-20) within the team, progressing from a defensive assistant to a defensive backs coach. He also received consideration for head coach positions with the Atlanta Falcons and the Miami Dolphins this week, with interview requests also coming from the Las Vegas Raiders, Pittsburgh Steelers, and Tennessee Titans.

The appointment of Minter marks a significant shift for the Ravens, as they look to build upon their legacy and achieve sustained success under new leadership.
