Hospice: Chitra Ravichandran, lying in the ICU of a hospital in Chennai, was fainting again and again, but when she saw her son Ravichandran Ashwin near her bed, she had only one question in her mind, ‘Why did you come here?’ Hours after becoming the second Indian bowler after Anil Kumble to take 500 Test wickets, Ashwin flew back to his home in Chennai midway through the third Test against England in Rajkot after his mother fell ill. Ashwin’s mother had become unconscious and had to be admitted to the ICU of the hospital.

Ashwin told ‘ESPN Cricinfo’ on the eve of his 100th Test, ‘When I reached the hospital, my mother was fainting after continuously regaining consciousness. The first thing he asked me after seeing me there was, ‘Why did you come?’ The next time she regained consciousness she said, ‘I think you should go back because the Test match is going on.’
I am now over 35 years old and my father still watches the matches as if it is my first international match. It means a lot to them. If I compare, my matches mean more to them than to me.
