Pierre Mignoni has stepped down as director of rugby for RC Toulon following a 28-0 defeat against Montpellier, leaving the club thirteenth and penultimate in the Top 14 standings after five matches.
RC Toulon Accepts Resignation After Montpellier Defeat
The Rugby Club Toulonnais announced on Tuesday that club president Bernard Lemaître spent Monday trying to convince Pierre Mignoni to stay, but the director of rugby insisted on stepping down. Mignoni offered his resignation immediately following a scoreless weekend loss away to Montpellier, where the squad failed to register a single point.
The club announced on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, that it had accepted the departure of Pierre Mignoni from his role as Director of Rugby. This decision was officially communicated in a statement released shortly after 9 o’clock. The club sits in thirteenth place in the Top 14 standings, having secured only one victory against Vannes alongside four defeats since the beginning of the campaign.

In an official statement released by the club, management confirmed that the decision came directly from Mignoni after a difficult start to the domestic campaign. The team has managed only one victory in five matches—a home win against newly promoted Vannes—while suffering four defeats.
The club added that Mignoni chose to take full responsibility for the team’s slide down the table. Having exhausted the tactical adjustments available to him, he concluded that a leadership change offered the best path to revitalize the professional squad.
Franck Azéma Takes Charge of the Professional Group
With Mignoni’s departure effective immediately, Toulon turned to a familiar face to steady the sporting department. Franck Azéma assumes responsibility for the professional group and will oversee sporting direction until further notice. Azéma returned to the Var region during the off-season after previously managing the club from 2021 to 2023.
The coaching transition arrives under immense competitive pressure. Toulon prepares to host Racing 92 at Stade Mayol, a side currently sitting ninth in the standings with two wins and three losses. Club leadership made clear that scrutiny now shifts squarely to the players.
Bernard Lemaître said, I repeat, the problem did not come from the coaching staff, but from the players. I hold it against them, they know it.

Physical Toll and the Mental Burden of Elite Coaching
Mignoni’s exit follows a demanding period regarding his personal well-being. In February, the 49-year-old manager suffered a burnout episode described as a decompensation following a 34-14 defeat against Clermont. That health crisis sidelined him for approximately a month.
Reflecting on that period earlier in the year, Mignoni detailed the intense pressure that accompanies top-flight rugby management. He noted that the mental strain far outweighed the physical demands of coaching on the training pitch.
It's not so much the workload on the pitch that is heavy, it's the mental load. And at a certain point, it really hit me full force. Pierre
Having rejoined Toulon in 2022 after previously playing for the club between 2011 and 2015, Mignoni oversaw the structural rebuilding of both the professional roster and the academy system. The club acknowledged those contributions in its departure announcement, thanking him for his commitment and foundational work since his return in 2022.
