How long have you been going to kindergarten?

I started dating before covid. It came about because I nominated a colleague from our tourism section for senior woman of the year and in connection with that she came to the event at Na Františku Hospital. I met Eva there (coordinator of the Mezi námi association – editor’s note) and she offered it to me. That’s when I took a reading test myself at home, mainly so that I wouldn’t stutter in front of the children, and then I happily accepted it.

What ideas did you have when Mrs. Eva told you about it?

At the time, I was a manager in the tourist department and could not imagine what this would entail. I was quite afraid of it. Mainly about how to deal with children, what I can or can’t do, whether I should or shouldn’t screw up.

Do you remember your first visit to kindergarten?

It was a bit of a bummer for me. I feel at home among the elderly, but here there was a huge age difference, almost 80 years. I struggled for a long time because I’m shy. But then I got used to it.

Have you read to your grandchildren?

Oh yes. But now they are over twenty years old. But we used to spend a lot of time in nature. At the age of four, they already gained 8 kilos. Now, on the other hand, I have an order from my grandson to take 6 thousand steps a day. It’s for health. But it goes smoothly. I have a hiking group so I go almost every day.

Do you live far from the kindergarten?

I have a bit of it, I go once a week. I hang out with my crew more. Milíčovský forest, Kunratice, Kolovraty or even Zadov in Šumava. Everywhere is beautiful.

So not only do you like to read, but you also like to play sports…

I was always incapable of sports. I didn’t start hiking until I was fifty years old, in the section in Vyšehrad. I walked 25 kilometers. Everything on foot. That was beautiful!

Do you have a teaching degree when you go to kindergarten now?

Not that. I am a chemist. I worked at the academy on epilepsy research. We had some students there, but I’m only close to pedagogy here.

How do kindergarten children listen when you read to them?

Today I read the book Čertí babička. Some children ran, others listened. It’s like when. Books with animals are the most successful.

Are you preparing for reading at home?

I also read six books a month. But I don’t read fairy tales at home, and certainly not out loud. Just here.

When you come here week after week, do you already know the kids by name?

I used to confuse Emička and Anetka, but now I know the children. But the fact is that I have a lot of children around me in my everyday life, so sometimes I don’t remember their names.

What does your family say about your volunteering?

Everyone is happy that I am not sitting at home and that I have a lot of activities. I also go to the conservationist club. So my family supports me in everything. I always tell them: Don’t call me today, I’m going to kindergarten today (laughs).

It is said that you also come here outside of reading…

They started inviting me to various events. Maybe they had Halloween or I went to church with them for Christmas. In the summer I will also go here to the garden. I am glad that I can come and be taken in.

Read program

Reading grandmothers and grandfathers throughout the Czech Republic In the »Read« program, fairy-tale reading grandmothers and grandfathers read fairy tales to children in kindergartens. “We always try to choose a kindergarten that is close to the senior, whether by distance or by heart. The program, which has been running since September 2015, has been well received by both mothers and seniors.” says the director.

The largest number of reading grandmothers and grandfathers who come regularly to read to their children is in Prague, but the numbers are gradually expanding in other regions of the country. Since autumn 2017, the volunteer program has been accredited by the Ministry of the Interior of the Czech Republic.
