UEFA Rejects Real Madrid Appeal, Sanctions Players for Champions League Conduct
UEFA has definitively dismissed Real Madrid’s appeal regarding sanctions levied against three of its players – Antonio Rüdiger, Kylian Mbappé, and Dani Ceballos – following their behavior after a Champions League match against Atlético de Madrid in March. The decisions, initially made by UEFA’s control, ethical and discipline committee, have been upheld, signaling a firm stance against misconduct in European competitions.
The controversy stems from incidents occurring at the conclusion of the second leg of the round of 16 clash. UEFA determined that all three players violated “the basic rules of decent conduct,” as outlined in article 11.2.b of the UEFA Disciplinary Regulations.
Player Sanctions Detailed
Each player received a financial penalty commensurate with their actions. Antonio Rüdiger was fined €40,000 for a gesture involving a hand around his neck, interpreted as provocative. Kylian Mbappé faced a €30,000 fine for gestures directed toward Atlético Madrid supporters that were deemed similarly inflammatory. Dani Ceballos was sanctioned with a €20,000 penalty for comparable behavior.
Beyond the financial repercussions, both Rüdiger and Mbappé initially received a one-match suspension from UEFA competitions. However, this suspension has been conditionally suspended for one year, meaning it will only be enforced if either player repeats such offenses.
“The appeal presented by Real Madrid CF is dismissed. Consequently, the committee’s decision is confirmed,” a UEFA statement declared, effectively closing this chapter of the disciplinary proceedings.
No Action Against Vinícius Júnior
Notably, UEFA confirmed that no disciplinary action would be taken against Real Madrid’s Vinícius Júnior, despite accusations leveled by opposing fans. This decision underscores the importance of substantiated evidence in disciplinary proceedings.
Additional Sanction for Real Madrid Following Arsenal Match
The disciplinary action wasn’t limited to player conduct. UEFA also ratified a separate sanction against Real Madrid stemming from an incident during the first leg of their quarterfinal tie against Arsenal at Emirates Stadium. A Real Madrid supporter was observed performing a Nazi greeting in the stands.
This act was classified as racist behavior under article 14.2 of the UEFA Regulations, resulting in a €15,000 fine for the club. Furthermore, Real Madrid received a conditional one-year ban on selling tickets to away fans in UEFA competitions, a measure that will be activated if similar incidents occur.
These rulings demonstrate UEFA’s commitment to upholding standards of conduct and combating racism within its competitions, sending a clear message that such behavior will not be tolerated.
