At the initiative of the Commission for the Protection of Competition, a discussion was held today on the existing competitive problems in the poultry industry, which was chaired by the Commission’s Chairman, Gegham Gevorgyan. Deputy Minister of Economy Tigran Gabrielyan, member of the Commission Hayk Karapetyan, businessmen involved in poultry production, members of the Public Council of Moscow State University, and other officials participated in the discussion.

The chairman of the commission, Gegham Gevorgyan, said that last year, the commission, together with the “Amberd” research center of ASTU, carried out a complex study aimed at revealing the general competitive situation in the field of poultry meat circulation, the results of which will be published in the near future.

According to Gegham Gevorgyan, the study particularly showed that the volume of poultry production is increasing in the world market, but the consumption is growing at a more advanced pace, and there is a presumption that it will continue in the coming years, which creates prerequisites for the expansion of local production. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the key reasons that hinder the increase in local production of chicken meat, because although they have increased, the level of self-sufficiency in chicken meat is still low, around 30 percent.

In response, the businessmen present at the meeting raised a number of issues, particularly regarding the import of raw materials, food safety and maintenance of standards, replenishment of the maternal staff and other issues. The officials of the sector presented clarifications and expressed readiness to discuss the ways of solving the raised problems.
