French Boutique Weaves Culinary Heritage onto Cotton: A Recipe for Success in Nice
Table of Contents
A unique collaboration between chefs, artisans, and retailers in Nice, France, is bringing traditional recipes to life in an unexpected medium: the tea towel. The project highlights a growing appreciation for French craftsmanship and the enduring appeal of regional cuisine.
Reviving a Nostalgic Icon
The concept originated with Trésors publics, a boutique opened in 2017 by Nicolas Barbero and Antoine Bourassin. Situated near the Cours Saleya market in Nice, the store offers over 1,000 items made in France, spanning leisure goods, cosmetics, stationery, and clothing. Among its offerings is a reimagined version of the recipe tea towel – a household staple popular in the 1970s alongside the calendar tea towel.
These aren’t your grandmother’s tea towels, however. Trésors publics commissions the weaving from Moutet, a workshop in Orthez (Pyrénées-Atlantiques) renowned for its expertise in 100% cotton jacquard. The designs feature not just ingredients, but the recipes themselves woven into the fabric, bordered by colorful lines created through a precise warping process mastered by the Moutet artisans. The result is a functional kitchen item that doubles as a piece of art, worthy of being framed.
A Chef’s Touch: From Michelin Stars to a Local Snack Bar
The founders of Trésors publics naturally sought out culinary expertise for the project, connecting with Dominique Le Stanc, a former two-Michelin-star chef from the famed Chantecler restaurant at the Hotel Negresco in Nice. Le Stanc, who prefers to be known simply as “to cook,” has also operated a beloved local establishment, The Snack (known as “snack” in the Niçoise dialect), for the past 29 years.
This small, 20-seat eatery in Old Nice has become known for its consistently prepared, authentic local dishes – including pissaladière, stuffed vegetables, tripe, and Niçoise-style stockfish – as well as a particularly celebrated lemon tart made with fresh market produce.
Recipes Woven into Tradition
Le Stanc’s renowned ratatouille is among the recipes now featured on these exclusive tea towels. Trésors publics is collaborating with other celebrated Nice eateries, including Maison Barale (famous for its ravioli) and Kiosque Tintin in the Libération district (known for its pan-bagnat), to expand the collection.
This collaboration embodies a simple yet profound principle: a great recipe relies not only on quality ingredients but also on the dedication and expertise of those who share it. It’s a “rule of three” – cook, shop, and weaver – that underscores the importance of preserving culinary traditions through thoughtful craftsmanship.
Where to Find These Culinary Keepsakes
The “Ratatouille” recipe tea towel, crafted from 100% cotton, is available for €15.90 exclusively at the Trésors Publics store located at 18, rue de la Préfecture, Nice. Currently, the boutique does not offer online sales, encouraging a personal shopping experience.
