Record-Breaking Seahorse Steals the Show at Rose Parade

Pasadena, California – A towering mechanical seahorse, stretching 34 feet into the air, rolled down Colorado Boulevard on New Year’s Day, securing a Guinness World Record as the largest animatronic fish and earning the “Director Award” for design at the Rose Parade.

Like many Rose Parade floats, the creation relied on the dedication of hundreds of volunteers who painstakingly covered the structure with materials like corn husks, lentils, sesame seeds, orange slices, and red carnations-often working through the night on New Year’s Eve. Rain threatened the parade, recalling similar challenges in 2006 when some floats faltered mid-route, according to McCormick.

“We’re really hoping it doesn’t rain for another 20 years, let me put it that way,” McCormick said.Despite the risk posed by water-sensitive adhesives and exposed hydraulics, the seahorse completed the 5.5-mile route without incident, a testament to the careful engineering that protected its complex animatronic systems.

Much of the float will be carefully disassembled and its components reused as the team begins planning for next year’s parade. For McCormick, the Guinness title represents a significant achievement. “In my 18 years, this is the first world record we’ve been part of,” she said. “It’s a testament to the mechanics and engineering that go into bringing a float like this down Colorado Boulevard.”
