Second Chance Animal Services Breaks Records, Helping Over 64,000 Pets in 2025
Second Chance Animal Services announced it provided care for a record-breaking 64,143 pets in 2025, significantly exceeding its previous high of 56,000. This milestone underscores the growing need for accessible animal care and the organization’s expanding impact across Massachusetts.
Rising Demand for Comprehensive Animal Welfare
The year 2025 marked a period of unprecedented growth for Second Chance, with every veterinary hospital within the network experiencing an increase in the number of animals served. This surge in demand is attributed to the organization’s commitment to affordable veterinary care, offering both accessible services and financial subsidies to qualifying pet owners.
The nonprofit’s adoption team faced a particularly challenging year, responding to an increased number of pets with complex and long-term medical needs. Notable rescue efforts included taking in 52 cats from a single home and providing critical care for 26 golden retriever mothers and their puppies, some of whom were less than two weeks old. The organization also provided extensive foster care for numerous underage puppies and kittens requiring specialized attention before becoming available for adoption. While these intensive cases led to a slight decrease in overall adoption numbers, Second Chance remains steadfast in its commitment as a no-kill shelter, refusing to euthanize animals for space and prioritizing comprehensive care.
“Each year, we think we may start to level out, and each year, we reach new heights,” said Sheryl Blancato, founder and CEO of Second Chance Animal Services. “It is incredibly exciting for the pets we are able to help every day, but it is also a sobering reminder of the growing challenges facing pets and the people who love them.”
Supporting Families and Vulnerable Populations
Beyond direct animal care, Second Chance expanded its support for pet owners facing difficult circumstances. Project Keep Me, a program providing temporary boarding and care for pets of domestic violence survivors and veterans undergoing in-patient treatment, saw its need more than double in 2025. This program ensures that pets and their owners can remain together during times of crisis, offering peace of mind and facilitating healing.
Demand for the Second Chance pet food pantry program also rose sharply, with the organization now supplying food to 26 local human food pantries. The increased need reflects the growing financial hardship faced by pet owners, and Second Chance is planning an expansion of its facilities to meet this demand. .
Record-Breaking Spay and Neuter Services
Second Chance’s commitment to preventative care was also evident in its spay and neuter program, which performed a record 8,747 procedures in 2025. Despite a temporary closure of the Worcester hospital following a fire in late 2024, the location experienced a significant increase in surgeries, demonstrating the program’s vital role in controlling pet populations and promoting animal health.
