Google Authenticator: Lost Keys Are Permanently Lost, Microsoft Warns

Users facing issues with deleted Google Authenticator keys have received a stark warning: recovery is impossible.

A recent post in the Microsoft Q&A forum confirmed a frustrating reality for many users – once a key is removed from Google Authenticator, it cannot be retrieved. The application is designed without a recovery mechanism for these authentication keys, meaning the secret used to generate codes is permanently lost.

“You cannot retrieve a deleted authenticator key from Google Authenticator,” a Microsoft representative stated. “Once an entry is removed, the app has no way to recover or display that secret again.”

This limitation underscores the importance of robust backup strategies for critical security credentials. While Microsoft acknowledges the issue, it directs users to resources outside of its direct control for potential solutions. The company suggests reviewing guidance within the Google Account Community, specifically a thread titled “I accidentally deleted my Google Auth.”

However, Microsoft issues a critical disclaimer regarding external resources. “This information is provided as a convenience to you,” the representative noted. “These sites are not controlled by Microsoft, and Microsoft cannot make any representations regarding the quality, safety, or suitability of any software or information found there. Please ensure that you fully understand the risks before using any suggestions from the above link.”

For users unable to recover access through Google’s resources, the path forward involves contacting their Exchange Server administrator. The administrator can then initiate a reset of multi-factor authentication (MFA) within the configured provider, such as Active Directory Federation Services (AD FS) or a third-party MFA solution.

This situation highlights the potential vulnerabilities inherent in relying solely on authenticator apps for security. Users are advised to proactively explore and implement backup methods for their authentication keys to mitigate the risk of complete account lockout.

To stay informed about updates and related notifications, users are encouraged to enable email notifications within the Microsoft documentation. This ensures they receive timely alerts regarding this and other relevant issues.
