Marist tennis Teams Showcase Grit at ITA Northeast regional Championships

The Marist College men’s and women’s tennis teams recently concluded a strong showing at the ITA Division I northeast Regional Championships, hosted by Yale University, demonstrating impressive performances in both singles and doubles play.

Marist athletes battled through a competitive field, facing off against rivals from across the Northeast.The championships provided a valuable prospect for the red Foxes to test their skills and gain experience against top Division I competition.

Men’s Team Highlights

The Marist men’s team saw success in doubles action, with Gregor Heinemann and Alejandro Abella Fernandez securing an 8-6 victory over Siena’s Koliadynski and Castellazzi. Despite a valiant effort, the duo narrowly missed advancing further, falling 9-8 (4) to cornell’s Pinzon and Teodorovic in a tightly contested match.

Jose Catala and Nick Suhanitski also made their mark in doubles, earning a 4-1 (ret.) win against Sacred Heart’s Garbacz and McRae. They were ultimately edged out 8-6 by Dartmouth’s Bao and Halmos. Ian Layton and Fateh singh competed as well, dropping an 8-5 decision to Brown’s Murphy and Lian.

In singles play, Suhanitski, Airudh Nallaparaju, and Abella each secured first-round wins. Suhanitski defeated bryant’s Peterson 6-1, 6-4; Nallaparaju overcame Niagara’s Garcia Uribe 6-1, 6-3; and Abella triumphed over Holy Cross’s Illanes 6-2, 6-3. While all three players ultimately fell in subsequent matches, their initial victories showcased the depth of talent within the Marist men’s program. Catala also competed in singles, but was defeated in his opening round match against Yale’s Liao, 6-2, 6-4.

Women’s Team Shines with Lorentzon’s Run

The Marist women’s team was led by Viktoria Lorentzon, who advanced to the Round of 16 in the main singles draw. Lorentzon displayed remarkable resilience,battling back from dropping the first set in her initial two matches.She defeated Brown’s Woo 2-6, 6-2, 6-0, and Boston University’s Borisova 0-6, 6-4, 7-5, before a narrow 6-3, 2-6, 7-5 loss to Cornell’s Loudon.

ella Lindsey also participated in the main draw, falling to Rhode Island’s Darcy 6-1, 6-4.

Doubles play saw success for Tess Wachtel and Lorentzon, who earned consecutive wins against Holy Cross’s Devine and Flynn (8-3) and UMass’s Tye and Faessler (8-5).Their impressive run concluded in the quarterfinals with an 8-5 loss to Brown’s Maguy and Moody. Hate Shre and Yasmin Asnis also competed in doubles, but were defeated 8-2 by Syracuse’s Shasta and Wojcik.

The ITA Northeast regional Championships provided a valuable platform for the marist tennis programs to compete at a high level and gain valuable experience as they prepare for the remainder of the season. The performances of Lorentzon and the strong showings across both the men’s and women’s teams signal a promising future for Marist tennis.
