BOSTON, March 1, 2025 – The Boston Red Sox are reportedly making a serious play to bring back third baseman Alex Bregman, according to ESPN’s Buster Olney, who stated Friday that he “thinks that Alex Bregman’s going to go back to the Red Sox.”

Boston aims to bolster its lineup after a significant trade last summer.
- The Red Sox have made an “aggressive offer” to Alex Bregman, signaling a strong desire to re-sign the veteran.
- Multiple teams, including the Toronto Blue Jays and Arizona Diamondbacks, are also in contention for Bregman’s services.
- Bregman, who will turn 32 in March, is projected to command a deal worth around five years and $170 million this offseason.
- Boston is seeking a power hitter following the trade of Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants.
Olney shared his assessment around the 7:15 mark of Friday’s episode of First Up with Korolnek and Colaiacovo, adding that the Red Sox “valued him last summer.” This pursuit comes after Bregman posted a .273 batting average, a .360 on-base percentage, and a .462 slugging percentage in 114 games for Boston last season.
What is Alex Bregman’s projected contract value this winter? ESPN’s Kiley McDaniel projects Bregman to receive a deal in the range of five years and $170 million.
Competition for Bregman’s Signature
While the Red Sox appear keen on a reunion, they aren’t alone in their interest. MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand recently reported that the Toronto Blue Jays and Arizona Diamondbacks “may be the two most aggressive clubs in the hunt for Bregman, though a Red Sox reunion remains a possibility.” The Detroit Tigers had previously shown interest, but according to a report from Detroit Free Press’ Evan Petzold, their interest is now described as “lukewarm.”
Last winter, the Tigers extended a six-year, $171.5 million offer to Bregman, including potential deferrals and an opt-out after 2026, as detailed by Petzold. However, Bregman ultimately chose to sign a three-year, $120 million deal with the Red Sox, featuring annual opt-outs, allowing him to re-enter free agency without a qualifying offer attached.
Filling the Void Left by Devers
The Red Sox’s interest in Bregman is particularly strong given their need for a power hitter after trading Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants last summer. Boston reportedly explored the possibility of signing Kyle Schwarber earlier this offseason, but he has since re-signed with the Philadelphia Phillies.
MLB.com’s Jared Greenspan and Theo DeRosa highlighted Suárez as a viable alternative, noting his impressive power numbers – he ranked fifth in MLB with 49 home runs in 159 games. For now, Bregman is among the biggest names available, alongside free agent Bo Bichette, who spent his last seven seasons with the Blue Jays, and Diamondbacks star Ketel Marte, who has been mentioned as a potential trade candidate.
