Boston Red Sox fans are buzzing about the potential return of Alex Bregman, with the club reportedly making an “aggressive” offer to the free agent third baseman last weekend, according to ESPN’s Buster Olney.

Bregman’s Return a Top Priority for Boston

The Red Sox are heavily invested in bringing back Bregman, viewing him as a key offensive and clubhouse presence.

  • Chief baseball officer Craig Breslow emphasized the team’s commitment to adding more offense.
  • Manager Alex Cora stated, “The ball is in his court” regarding Bregman’s decision.
  • Outfielder Roman Anthony publicly expressed strong support for Bregman’s return.
  • Boston appears unlikely to trade any of its current outfielders.
  • Several Red sox players are progressing well in their recovery from injuries.

“We’re going to do everything we possibly can to add more offense,” breslow told reporters, including Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald. “We saw the impact Alex (Bregman) had last year, on the field, in the clubhouse, in the community, someone that fits our team really well. He’s still a player we’re very interested in.”

Bregman slashed.273/.360/.462 with 18 home runs across 495 plate appearances. He also earned his third All-Star selection and consistently delivered strong defensive play at third base.

Outfield Logjam, trade Unlikely

Boston currently has four outfielders vying for playing time: Roman Anthony, Jarren Duran, Wilyer Abreu, and Ceddanne Rafaela. Breslow dismissed the possibility of a trade to alleviate the congestion. “It was never likely in my mind,” Breslow told reporters, including Cotillo. “We’ve got really talented outfielders. When teams call, that’s what other executives point to. They’re young, they’re controllable, they’re dynamic, they’re talented, and can impact games in multiple ways. Its really nice to be able to say they’re also members of the Boston Red Sox.”

Manager Cora indicated a preference for Rafaela in center field and Abreu in right field, even against left-handed pitching, a sentiment previously expressed by Breslow. Rafaela, a Gold Glove winner in center field, has also seen time at second base and shortstop. Abreu, also a Gold Glove recipient, is expected to feature prominently in the outfield.

Injury Updates Offer Encouraging News

First baseman Triston Casas is recovering from a ruptured patellar tendon in his right knee. He told reporters, including Christopher Smith of MassLive, that his return for the start of the 2026 campaign is uncertain, but he hopes to participate in some spring training games. “As of right now, not too sure. Not trying to get ahead of myself, but I do see myself progressing well enough to maybe get into some spring training games. We’ll see how that goes as that’s a benchmark as well.”

The Red Sox recently acquired Willson Contreras to play first base, which raises questions about Casas’ role upon his return. Casas, however, expressed a positive outlook, stating, “He’s a better player then me and has been for his entire career. To upgrade at a position that has been deficient for the last two years is exactly what the team needed.” (relayed by Cotillo)

Several other players are also on track for full participation in spring training. Marcelo Mayer expects to be fully recovered from a wrist injury that cut his 2025 season short. Anthony is also expected to be ready after an oblique injury sidelined him in September and during the postseason. Veteran pitcher Chris Crawford is progressing well in his recovery from knee and wrist issues, and Carlos Narvaez, who underwent knee surgery, anticipates being fully healthy by springtime.
