DETROIT, February 10, 2026 — A right shoulder injury will sideline Detroit Tigers pitcher Reese Olson for the entire 2026 season, the team announced today, forcing a reshuffling of the pitching rotation and prompting the team to lean heavily on recent free agent acquisitions.
Rotation Shakeup Following Olson’s Surgery
The Tigers’ pitching plans have been dramatically altered by Olson’s labral repair and another injury within the organization.
- Reese Olson underwent right shoulder labral repair on February 2 and will miss the 2026 season.
- Jackson Jobe, recovering from Tommy John surgery, has also been placed on the 60-day injured list.
- The Tigers will now rely on Framber Valdez and Justin Verlander, recent free agent signings, to anchor the rotation.

Olson, 26, has been a key part of the Tigers’ pitching staff since his debut in 2023, posting a 3.60 ERA across 56 appearances. He initially strained his right shoulder in late July 2025, and told Chris McCosky on February 11 that he re-injured it last October. Rather than undergo immediate surgery and miss the entire 2026 season, Olson attempted rehabilitation for several months, hoping to avoid the operating table. Unfortunately, the rehab proved insufficient, leading to the February 2 surgery.
Jobe’s Recovery and Roster Moves
Right-hander Jackson Jobe is also facing a lengthy recovery. He underwent Tommy John surgery in June and is expected to miss most, if not all, of the upcoming season. Both Olson and Jobe have been placed on the 60-day injured list, creating roster space for the newly signed Framber Valdez and Justin Verlander.
What impact will Olson’s absence have on the Tigers’ pitching depth? The arrival of Valdez and Verlander becomes even more crucial. Detroit’s rotation is now expected to feature Valdez and Tarik Skubal as the top starters, followed by Verlander, Jack Flaherty, and Casey Mize. Troy Melton will provide depth, with Jobe potentially joining the mix later in the season.
Olson’s Journey to Detroit
The Tigers acquired Olson from the Milwaukee Brewers in a trade for Daniel Norris at the 2021 trade deadline. He spent the remainder of that season in Double-A before showcasing impressive strikeout numbers in 2022, with a 33.1% strikeout rate at that level. A promotion to Triple-A in 2023 followed, where he continued to demonstrate his ability to generate strikeouts, despite a 6.38 ERA. He ultimately made 18 starts for Detroit that season, finishing September strong with just five earned runs allowed across five appearances.
Despite possessing a promising arsenal featuring a changeup and slider with whiff rates exceeding 42% in both 2024 and 2025, Olson struggled to translate that potential into consistent strikeouts at the major league level, maintaining a swinging-strike rate of 12.7% over the past two seasons. He has yet to average a strikeout per inning during his time with the Tigers.
