Rejection of Opposition’s demand makes Sri Lanka no chance of early elections: President Ranil confirms

by time news

Colombo: After the Rajapakse brothers stepped down due to the severe economic crisis in Sri Lanka, Ranil took over as president last July. Since then, he has actively embarked on the recovery of the country’s economy. At the same time, the opposition parties are insisting on early elections to the Parliament. Ranil, who is also the Finance Minister, held a vote on the budget in Parliament the day before yesterday. Earlier, 5 ministers including aviation and agriculture ministers were suspended for anti-party activities. Addressing the Parliament yesterday, President Ranil said, “Until the economic problems are resolved, there is no room for talk of dissolving the Parliament. There is no possibility of holding the parliamentary elections early,’ he rejected the demand of the opposition parties. With this, Ranil will continue as President till November 2024 till the end of his tenure.
