BRESSANONE. Provide the fundamental elements on Islamic religion but also to raise awareness among young people on the topic of peaceful coexistence by promoting a climate of inclusion and integration. This was the aim of the experimental project “Islam and Christianity: points of contact” held between the desks of the Mattei professional institute in Bressanone.

A project set up to meet the ever-growing demand of foreign students who choose the Brissino institute to lay the foundations for their education and future. The course, lasting 8 hours in total – one hour per month for the duration of the two quarters – took place on compatible dates and times for around thirty enrolled children. «This course aims to provide some fundamental elements on the Islamic religion – explains the director of the Mattei Institute, Alberto Conci – promoting a climate of inclusion and integration, as well as showing some points of contact and commonality between the Christian and Islamic religions. To this end, this short alternative course also included the presence and collaboration of an external collaborator: a practicing Muslim.”

«The topics that were briefly covered during the lesson hours were the following: Creation; Abraham; Noah and Moses; Jesus and Mary; respect for the human person: the right to life, peace, justice, the value of charity. It should be noted that the course had no propaganda purpose. On the contrary, starting from the point of view of knowledge, the intention was to provide some fundamental elements on the Islamic and Christian religions. Secondly, from the point of view of skills, we wanted to develop the ability to recognize the importance of the ethical indications of religions and to know how to compare them with each other.”

«From the point of view of skills, we have set ourselves the objective of encouraging the development of a free and aware conscience, which knows how to motivate its own beliefs regarding religion, which knows how to respectfully communicate its own experience and which knows how to live respectfully with the choices and experiences different from one’s own.” At the end of the project, the first of its kind in Bressanone, the deputy mayor Ferdinando Stablum and the professor Leone Fedeli of religious education also spoke and underlined the goodness of the initiative.
