A new initiative in Chile is ensuring students with celiac disease and other food allergies have access to safe and adequate nutrition, bolstering their educational opportunities and easing the financial burden on families. The program, spearheaded by Junaeb Araucanía, recently underwent an evaluation day at the Domingo Santa María Polytechnic High School in the Renaico commune.
The evaluation event brought together students benefiting from the program, their parents and guardians, school officials overseeing the School Feeding Program (PAE), and regional Junaeb Director Francisco Brizuela Tapia. The focus was on assessing the program’s effectiveness and gathering feedback for improvements.
Addressing a Critical Need
The Celiac PAE and Food Allergies program delivers monthly baskets of specialized foods tailored to each student’s medical condition and nutritional needs, taking into account their educational level to determine appropriate daily energy intake. The program currently supports students with a range of allergies, including intolerances to gluten, cow’s milk protein, nuts, fish, eggs, certain fruits, and shellfish, all based on verified medical diagnoses.
During the evaluation day, Aliservice, the company responsible for food service in Renaico and surrounding areas, showcased the contents of the celiac basket and demonstrated preparations using those ingredients. This highlighted the program’s commitment to providing both safe and nutritious options for students.
Positive Impact on Students and Families
Junaeb’s regional director emphasized the importance of direct feedback. “It is a great satisfaction to observe and feel on the ground the positive impact that the program has had this year and, particularly, on the educational career of the three students from the Renaico commune,” he stated.
The program’s impact is particularly significant for families struggling to afford specialized foods. Alexia Villarroel, a student at Domingo Santa María de Renaico Polytechnic High School who has participated in the program since 2018, shared her experience. “The basket has helped us a lot, since products for gluten intolerance are very scarce and very expensive. I live alone with my father, it is a little complicated for us to acquire food, but the basket has helped us a lot because it brings everything to eat daily, including snacks,” she explained.
Regional Reach and Future Growth
Currently, 44 students across La Araucanía region benefit from the program, with 13 in the province of Malleco and 3 specifically in the Renaico commune. This initiative underscores the dedication of JUNAEB and local educational communities to providing inclusive nutrition that meets the unique needs of every student.
This effort represents a significant step towards ensuring all students have the nutritional support they need to thrive academically and reach their full potential.
