Renaming at the G20 summit – Modi turns India into Bharat

New Delhi When it comes to naming his most important initiatives, India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi relies on familiar patterns. He called his attempt to bring manufacturing companies into the country “Make in India”. “Startup India” is the name of its support program for entrepreneurs, “Digital India” is the name of its technological transformation campaign. But now Modi seems to have had enough of “India”: At the G20 summit, which he is hosting in the capital New Delhi this weekend, he is now letting his country appear under a different name: Modi is now turning India into “Bharat”.

The people of India use the Sanskrit expression “Bharat” and “India” as synonyms when they speak of their own country – both names are also mentioned equally in the country’s constitution. Until now, only “India” was used internationally. But Modi is now suddenly saying goodbye to this convention in front of the eyes of the world – thereby fueling speculation about a complete renaming of India.
