Reports: Apple May Launch Lighter MacBook Pros with Touchscreens by November

Apple is preparing to release redesigned 14-inch and 16-inch portable computers as early as October or November this year, according to reports from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. While prior MacBook iterations relied primarily on annual chip updates, this cycle targets the physical hardware, moving away from conventional mini-LED panels toward advanced screen technology and a touch-adapted operating environment.

Apple Slimming Down the New MacBook Pro Chassis

Apple has developed the new machines with structural modifications. Rather than merely swapping out display panels, engineers have completely gutted and rearranged the interior layout of the chassis.

Apple has reengineered the machine’s interior, miniaturizing parts and rearranging components to make the computer much easier to carry.

By miniaturizing internal components and rearranging components, the manufacturer aims to make the next-generation laptop significantly lighter than its predecessors, addressing user complaints regarding bulk. Current 16-inch professional configurations can weigh up to 4.7 or 4.8 pounds, a heft driven largely by advanced thermal cooling systems.

Reviewer Kyle Barr noted that a 14-inch M5 Max version weighs 3.56 pounds with added bulk coming largely from advanced cooling, whereas current MacBook Air models weigh 2.7 or 3.3 pounds depending on the configuration. Gurman notes that users will notice the physical reduction immediately when handling the portable device.

MacBook Pro Adds Touchscreen Support and Tandem OLED Panels

Stacked tandem panels allow individual pixels to switch off completely in dark areas rather than relying on a backlit panel to approximate black, differing from traditional single-layer OLED or Mini-LED Liquid Retina XDR displays which feature a 1,600-nit peak HDR brightness and a 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio per Apple’s specifications.

The upcoming release marks a hardware change by bringing touchscreen support to the MacBook Pro for the first time. Analysts like Ming-Chi Kuo and reporters tracking the supply chain have highlighted these components as part of the extensive testing pipeline.

Apple Prepares macOS 27 for Touch Inputs

Internal testing indicates that the upcoming portable machines are currently running versions of macOS 27 (including builds such as macOS 27.1 and beta versions of macOS 27.2, alongside references to macOS Golden Gate), with software adjustments specifically engineered to support touch input and the Dynamic Island interface.

Configurations such as the 14-inch M5 Pro variants and high-end 16-inch M5 Max models have seen price cuts reaching up to $900 across various online merchant listings as retail channels clear stock ahead of the anticipated lineup transition. Meanwhile, third-party retailers have already initiated deep promotional discounts on current-generation inventory powered by those same M5 chips.
