Respiratory Illnesses Rise in Bihor County, But Remain Within Seasonal Expectations

The Directorate of Public Health reports a recent uptick in acute respiratory infections in Bihor County, though health officials maintain the situation is currently within expected parameters for this time of year. Notably, no confirmed cases of influenza have been detected in the 2025/2026 season to date, based on PCR testing.

Increased Respiratory Infections Reported

Between November 10 and 16, the Epidemiological Surveillance Department documented 4,767 cases of acute upper respiratory tract infections (IACRS). This represents an increase from the 4,410 cases reported the previous week, but remains lower than the 6,022 cases recorded during the same period last season. Of those affected, 34 patients required hospitalization.

Alongside the rise in IACRS cases, 965 instances of pneumonia and bronchopneumonia were registered during the same interval. While this figure also marks an increase from the prior week (927 cases), it is still below the 1,128 cases observed last year. A total of 89 individuals needed hospitalization due to pneumonia and bronchopneumonia.

Vaccination Efforts Underway

As of November 17, a total of 20,154 doses of the flu vaccine have been administered throughout Bihor County, indicating ongoing efforts to protect the population against influenza.

Public Health Recommendations

With temperatures declining, the DSP Bihor is actively reminding residents of key preventative measures to minimize the risk of illness. These include maintaining a balanced diet, avoiding prolonged exposure to cold temperatures, practicing frequent hand washing, utilizing disposable tissues when coughing or sneezing, and avoiding crowded environments. At large gatherings, the use of masks is recommended.

Individuals experiencing symptoms such as fever, cough, nasal congestion, sore throat, or headache are advised to self-isolate and contact their family doctor. Health officials strongly discourage self-medication, particularly the use of antibiotics without a medical prescription.
