Theft on the rise: 24 US cities see increase in shoplifting incidents compared to 2019

A new study from the Council on Criminal Justice has revealed a troubling trend in retail theft across 24 major US cities. According to the data, there have been 8,453 more shoplifting incidents in the first half of 2023 compared to the same period in 2019.

The study shows that New York City has suffered the most, with a 64 percent increase in retail theft, followed by Los Angeles at 61 percent and Virginia Beach at 44 percent. Other cities that have seen increases in shoplifting include Dallas and Raleigh, North Carolina.

However, the report also highlights some cities that have seen levels of crime reduce dramatically. St. Petersburg, Florida, has enjoyed a 78 percent decrease in theft, while the twin cities of St. Paul and Minneapolis in Minnesota have seen a 65 percent and 57 percent drop, respectively.

The study projects that the number of shoplifting incidents nationwide is expected to reach 122,368 by the end of 2023, marking the highest level since 2018. This increase is attributed to various factors, including an increase in bail reform laws and a higher reporting rate by stores.

The report also notes that the median value of goods stolen grew from around $75 in 2019 to $100 in 2021. Additionally, incidents of shoplifting that involved assault or another crime rose 9 percent from 2019 to 2021.

The rise in retail theft has prompted a response from businesses, with major retailers such as Target and CVS implementing measures to deter shoplifters, such as locking up products.

The findings from the study underscore the growing concern over the surge in theft across the US and highlight the need for proactive measures to address the issue.
