Former UFC Bantamweight Champion Cody Garbrandt’s career has hit another rough patch. After a loss at UFC Atlanta, his record in the last ten fights now stands at 3-7. The mixed martial arts world is watching closely, with many wondering what’s next for the once-dominant fighter.

A Familiar Face, Different Look

Garbrandt, 33, entered the octagon at UFC Atlanta sporting a new look, including long hair and prominent tattoos, notably a sword through his right eye. This contrasted sharply with his appearance in earlier fights, such as the one against Deiveson Figueiredo at UFC 300.

Facing Barcelos

Garbrandt fought against Brazilian veteran Raoni Barcelos in a bantamweight bout. Despite a decent first round, Barcelos outmaneuvered Garbrandt in the subsequent rounds, leading to a unanimous decision victory.

This latest loss has reignited discussions about Garbrandt’s future in the sport. Some fans are openly suggesting retirement, expressing concern about his recent performance trajectory. A UFC veteran has also commented that “something is going on” with Garbrandt, suggesting there’s more to the story than just the fights.

Thomson’s Insight

Former UFC and Strikeforce fighter Josh Thomson offered a candid assessment of Garbrandt’s struggles, suggesting the fighter is dealing with challenges beyond the physical competition. Thomson observed that Garbrandt “is fighting some inner demons” during his performance at UFC Atlanta.

“The Cody situation is very frustrating from the outside looking in because you see all the talent,” Thomson said on The Weighing In Podcast.

“You see everything he’s doing. I think as a former fighter and other people that I’ve talked to also, the tattoo on the face, the other stuff going on.

“It’s almost like a mid-life crisis he’s going through,” Thomson added.

“There’s more to it than just fighting. It seems like he’s fighting some inner demons. He’s got some other things going on. It’s sad because he’s so talented, so blessed. He’s got all the tools and everything he can be that a lot of fighters wish they had.

“But something’s going on. There’s something else going on with him,” the retired fighter said of Garbrandt.

A History of Comebacks

Garbrandt, once undefeated at 11-0 and a world champion, has shown resilience in the past. After suffering three consecutive knockout losses, including a title loss to TJ Dillashaw in 2017, he rebounded with a stunning knockout of Raphael Assuncao at UFC 250. However, that momentum didn’t last, as he then lost his next two fights. He secured two wins in 2023 before losing to Deiveson Figueiredo by submission at UFC 300.
