In the coalition agreements between Religious Zionism and Likud, it was agreed: The appointment of the rabbi will be determined by a committee chaired by the Sephardic Chief Rabbi – not by the Chief of Staff • The committee will have five rabbis, a politician and an officer

The chief military rabbi will be appointed by the First Zionist and not, as has been customary until now – by the Chief of Staff. This was reported by Roi Sharon in ‘Khan Haod’.

In the coalition agreements between religious Zionism and Likud, it was stipulated that “a law strengthening the status of the chief military rabbi that determines his status, through the appointment and halachic independence of the rabbi” will be passed.

The meaning of the proposed law is that whoever appoints the chief military rabbi will be a committee headed by the chief Sephardic rabbi, Rabbi Yitzhak Yosef.

The committee will consist of a representative of the government, a yeshiva leader, two more representatives of yeshiva organizations, the head of AKA and a former rabbi – five rabbis, a politician and an officer.

In addition, according to the new law, the Rabbi will be subject to the halachic rulings of the Chief Rabbinate, whose rulings differ from the decisions of the military rabbinate on quite a few issues such as conversion, burial of non-Jewish martyrs, women’s service, operational needs on Shabbat, and more.
