Italian Healthcare System Expands Rheumatology Services, Focuses on Fibromyalgia Care

A new initiative by asst Pavia aims to broaden access to rheumatological care throughout the Pavia region, with a particular emphasis on the recently recognized condition of fibromyalgia. The effort was highlighted at the second annual conference held today in Stradella, beginning at 9 a.m. in the Brambilla room, and featuring presentations from leading medical professionals and company management, including Giancarlo Iannello.
The core objective, as outlined by rheumatologists Silvia Balduzzi and Silvia Grignaschi, the conference’s scientific directors, is to “make general practitioners aware of the rheumatology offer of the Asst Pavia present in a widespread manner throughout the Pavia area with dedicated clinics at the hospital in Stradella, Voghera and Vigevano from the territory.”
The stradella hospital’s specialist rehabilitation department is designed to address the full spectrum of patient needs.
A key component of this strategy is fostering collaboration between Asst, the San Matteo Rheumatology unit – a specialized centre for rare diseases – and local general practitioners, alongside active engagement with patient advocacy groups like the Lombardy Association of Rheumatological Diseases. The conference featured a report from the association’s president,alomar,emphasizing the importance of this collaborative approach.
Prioritizing early Arthritis detection
Early intervention is critical in managing rheumatic conditions. “Early identification of the patient suffering from arthritis by the general practitioner is importent for a timely referral to the Asst rheumatologist so that he can change the course of the rheumatic pathology, which is often disabling and which involves young people of working age,” Balduzzi explained. This proactive approach aims to mitigate the long-term impact of these diseases on patients’ lives and productivity.
Fibromyalgia Takes Center Stage
A dedicated session at the conference focused on fibromyalgia, a chronic and frequently enough debilitating condition that has recently been included in Italy’s Essential Levels of Assistance (LEA). “The inclusion of fibromyalgia in the LEA represents an important official recognition at a national level and a essential step for the protection of patients suffering from this pathology,” Caffetti stated. “Taking care of patients suffering from fibromyalgia is very complex and requires multidisciplinary approaches, not only visits and clinical monitoring by the rheumatologist, but also the involvement of the physiatrist and physiotherapist for individual rehabilitation projects.” Maria Buroni, coordinator of the Stradella Rehabilitation physiotherapists, further underscored the vital role of rehabilitation in improving the quality of life for fibromyalgia sufferers.
The economic Burden of Rheumatic Diseases
The impact of rheumatic diseases extends beyond individual suffering, posing a substantial economic challenge. Research from the Health and Health Observatory reveals that chronic rheumatic diseases cost Italy over €4 billion annually. A significant portion of this expenditure – €1.739 billion – is attributed to lost productivity resulting from approximately 287,000 sick workers.
