‘RHOP’ Star Wendy Osefo and Husband Face Fraud Charges, Sparking Racial Targeting Claims
Real Housewives of Potomac alum Candiace Dillard Bassett has voiced concerns that the recent arrest of Wendy Osefo and her husband, Eddie Osefo, on multiple fraud charges may be racially motivated. The couple was booked in Westminster, Maryland, on Thursday, October 10, following a grand jury indictment.
Candiace Dillard Bassett expressed her shock and sadness during a live appearance on FOX 5 DC, stating, “I am shocked. I’m sad. I’m literally just getting this news with you all. I was shaking.” She questioned the severity of the charges in relation to the alleged offense, asking, “That $300 — and we’re arresting a mother and a father, business owners, entrepreneurs?”
The charges stem from an alleged staged burglary at the Osefos’ Maryland home in April 2024. Investigators claim the couple falsely reported the theft of luxury items while vacationing in Jamaica. However, authorities discovered many of the purportedly stolen items remained at the residence. Further investigation revealed photos on Wendy Osefo’s Instagram account depicting her wearing one of the “stolen” diamond rings after the reported burglary.
Emails recovered from the couple’s accounts allegedly show Eddie Osefo inquiring about adding “additional high-value items” to their insurance claim to reach the $423,000 policy maximum. Authorities allege the couple submitted fraudulent insurance claims totaling $450,000 in property loss, with some items having been previously returned to stores for refunds.
Dillard Bassett, who maintains a close relationship with Wendy Osefo, highlighted the couple’s contributions to the community, noting their successful marijuana business provides “jobs and opportunities for people of color in the DMV.” This led her to question whether the Osefos are being unfairly targeted. “My first thought is, are they being targeted?” she stated. “It just feels like someone is out to get the girls. How are two women from the same show dealing with arrests like this?”
The arrests follow the recent completion of a one-year sentence – with six months served – by fellow Real Housewives of Potomac star Karen Huger for multiple DUI convictions. This adds another layer of scrutiny to the franchise and its cast members’ legal troubles.
In response to the allegations, Wendy Osefo has limited comments on her Instagram posts, restricting discussion of the arrest and fraud allegations. Her team released a statement confirming the couple’s safe return home and expressing gratitude for the support received. The statement also affirmed their intention to address the charges in court, requesting privacy during the legal process.
The Osefos, alongside their legal team, look forward to their day in court. At this time, they respectfully ask for privacy as they focus on their family and the legal process ahead.
