The Ribera de Arriba City Council and the Autonomous University of Madrid, UAM, have signed an agreement to set up a Mathematics and Science Classroom that will be directed by the emeritus professor of the academic institution Juan Luis Vazquez, who for years was a professor of Applied Mathematics. The Classroom is presented today at 1:00 p.m. at the House of Arts and Sciences in Bueño. In the act the intervention of the Mayor of Ribera de Arriba, Tomás Fernández; of the dean of the Faculty of Sciences of the UAM, Manuel Chicharro; and his director.
Juan Luis Vázquez (Oviedo, 1946), a member of the Spanish Royal Academy of Sciences, lived during his childhood and youth in Ribera de Arriba. Retired and 76 years old, he maintains an intense research work, which perpetuates his leadership in the field of differential equations in partial derivatives and their applications. In addition, he continues with his profuse dissemination activity.
The Asturian mathematician is directly involved in setting up the Mathematics and Science Classroom, whose creation was advanced by the Ribera de Arriba City Council last January. The Classroom was born with the vocation of contributing to spreading scientific culture throughout the region and as a forum for the dissemination of mathematics.
The overall investment in the initiative is two million euros: one for the rehabilitation of the Prieto mansion, where the Classroom will be based, and another for an exhibition hall.
The Ribera de Arriba City Council plans to close the works at the end of this year, in order to qualify for aid from the central government. Later, it plans to deal with the urbanization of the area, including a large parking lot for 400 vehicles.
The Ribera de Arriba Mathematics and Science Classroom plans to start its activity this year. For its first season, conferences, meetings and debates have been scheduled in which the participation of prestigious specialists, both Spanish and foreign, is expected.
