Riftbound: Unleashed – New Mechanics, Tokens & Release Dates

by Ethan Brooks

Riftbound, the strategy card game set in the world of League of Legends, is expanding with its third set, “Unleashed,” bringing a host of new mechanics, tokens, and product offerings to players. The update, slated for release in Chinese markets on April 10 and English markets on May 8, introduces a dynamic new layer of gameplay centered around accumulating “XP” and utilizing the “Hunt” and “Ambush” mechanics. This expansion aims to deepen strategic options and offer a more engaging experience for both newcomers and veteran players of the collectible card game.

At the heart of “Unleashed” is the introduction of XP, a resource players earn through gameplay and spend to unlock powerful advantages. Unlike traditional mana or energy systems, XP is gained by winning combats and completing objectives, creating a reward loop that encourages aggressive play. The new system isn’t just about accruing points. it directly impacts card abilities, scaling their power as players level up. This core mechanic, alongside the new tokens and strategic options, is designed to add complexity and reward skillful deck building and tactical decision-making. The full release schedule, including preview periods and skirmish windows, has also been detailed, giving players a clear timeline for engaging with the new content.

Earning and Spending Experience

XP functions as a persistent resource throughout a match, offering a unique progression system within the game. Champions like Kha’Zix, Voidreaver, exemplify how XP is earned and utilized. According to Riot Games’ preview materials, Kha’Zix gains 1 XP each time he wins a combat. This XP can then be spent to buff allied units or reposition exhausted units back to base.

However, XP’s impact extends beyond immediate tactical advantages. As players accumulate XP, their cards level up, unlocking new abilities and enhancing existing ones. Master Yi, Unstoppable, serves as a prime example. At 3 XP, Master Yi’s cost is reduced, and at higher levels – 6, 11, and ultimately 16 – he becomes increasingly resilient to enemy spells and abilities. This leveling system adds a long-term strategic layer, encouraging players to prioritize XP gain and carefully manage their resources.

New Mechanics: Hunt and Ambush

“Unleashed” introduces two new mechanics designed to enhance strategic depth: Hunt and Ambush. Hunt rewards players for controlling the battlefield, granting XP when a unit conquers or holds a territory. The Mosstompter card, for instance, provides 2 XP each time it conquers or holds a battlefield, further incentivizing aggressive territorial control. This mechanic encourages players to actively contest and maintain control of key areas, adding a dynamic element to the game’s strategic landscape.

Ambush, inspired by the jungler role in League of Legends, allows players to deploy units as a reaction to enemy actions. Inferna, a new card featuring this mechanic, can be played in response to a contested battlefield, providing a surprise attack and disrupting enemy strategies. The combination of Ambush and Assault 2 on the Inferna card promises a powerful and unpredictable playstyle.

Expanding the Arsenal: New Tokens and Products

Alongside the new mechanics, “Unleashed” introduces a variety of new tokens to further diversify gameplay. These include the Baron Pit, appearing when Baron Nashor is played; the elusive Bird token with its Deflect ability; the Brush token, introduced with Ivern, Green Father, allowing players to alter the battlefield; and familiar tokens like Buff and Gold. A new token, Reflection, copies the abilities of another card in play, adding a layer of strategic complexity. The Sprite token is temporary, removed at the start of the player’s turn, adding a risk-reward element to its deployment. A dedicated XP tracker will also be included to help players manage their resources effectively.

Riot Games is also expanding the product line with the introduction of “The Vault,” a reusable storage box containing 6 Booster Packs, 36 basic runes, 3 double-sided full art tokens, and 2 dividers. This new product aims to provide players with a convenient way to store and organize their growing card collections. The Booster Display art features Vi, Rengar, Master Yi, and LeBlanc, visually representing the aggressive, teamfight-focused gameplay of the set.
