Riga Announces Sweeping School and Preschool Reorganization Plan

Riga’s education landscape is set for critically important change as the city council announced a comprehensive plan to merge schools and preschools, consolidate buildings, and optimize resources. the restructuring, designed to improve the efficiency of the education network, will impact numerous neighborhoods across the Latvian capital.

Major School Mergers and Realignment

Several schools are slated for consolidation. Riga Primary School 74, Riga Secondary School 64, Riga Rīnūži Secondary School, and Riga Secondary School 31 will be merged into larger institutions. In the Purvciem district, the newly formed riga 64th Secondary School will operate across three buildings within a single block. Meanwhile, in Vecmīlgrāvi, the newly established secondary school will function in two buildings, with plans to eventually vacate one of the locations.

Preschool Consolidations and Closures

The preschool sector will also undergo significant restructuring. In Teika, Riga’s 183rd preschool educational institution “Pumpuriņš”, and “Pumpuriņi” will be combined, while maintaining service at both existing locations. A similar approach is planned in Ziepniekkalns, merging Riga’s 124th preschool educational institution “Dzērvenīte”, Riga Ziepniekkalns preschool, and preschool educational institution “Ziepniekkalns”.

Grīziņkalns will also see a consolidation of Riga’s 44th preschool educational institution, Riga Grīziņkalns preschool, and “Grīziņkalns” pre-school educational institution, with all existing service locations remaining operational.

Though, the plan also includes the closure of several preschool buildings. In Bolderāja,the building at Stūrmaņu iela 7 will cease operations,as will the location at Lidoņu iela 10A in Iļguciem,and Marsa gatve 16 in Purvciem. The affected preschools will continue to operate from their remaining buildings.

Significant changes are planned in Imanta, where Riga 104th preschool educational institution, preschool educational institution “Kurzeme”, “Imanta”, “Margrietiņa”, and “Kamenīte” will be unified. Preschools “Zilbīte” and “Dzintariņš” are slated to merge in Ķengarag.

Reduced Service Locations and Future Use of Buildings

The reorganization also anticipates a reduction in the number of service locations in several neighborhoods. Daugavgrīva,Vecmīlgrāvi,Dzirciem,Ķengarag,the Latgale suburb,and sarkandaugava will collectively see seven buildings vacated. The municipality intends to repurpose these buildings for other public functions.
