When The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power returns for its third outing, the fantasy epic leaves behind its expansive world-building phase to plunge headfirst into open warfare. The new season picks up five years after the fall of Eregion, finding Middle-earth ravaged by Sauron’s advancing armies. Only isolated sanctuaries remain between the Dark Lord and total domination: the dwarven stronghold of Khazad-dûm, where inhabitants have sealed themselves deep within mountain halls, alongside the elven realms of Lindon and Rivendell, which hold fast behind the protection of their Three Rings.
Deep inside the newly completed tower of Barad-dûr in Mordor, Charlie Vickers reprises his role as a fully unmasked Sauron. No longer operating in disguise or lingering in shadows, the villain occupies center stage for a narrative shift that co-showrunners J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay describe as starkly more perilous. Showrunners drew directly from Tolkien’s linguistic foundations to construct these characters, analyzing Black Speech to craft the designation. According to production details, the Black Speech root nagôl
denotes a servant, making the compound title translate literally as ring-servant.
Zubin Varla portrays Khamûl the Easterling, one of the men destined for corruption on the path to becoming a ring-servant. Describing the psychological descent, Varla noted that evil begets evil, and violence begets violence
as their physical and spiritual forms are hollowed out. Rather than viewing themselves as villains, these warlords operate under the conviction that their rightful power was usurped, making Sauron’s manipulative offers an appealing route back to dominance.
