Latvian President Celebrates 107th Independence Day, Honors Nation’s Heroes

A powerful message of gratitude and national pride resonated through the Riga Palace as Latvia marked its 107th birthday, recognizing the contributions of its citizens and reaffirming its commitment to a brighter future.

The annual awards ceremony, held at the Riga Palace, was imbued with a palpable sense of joy, sincerity, and national pride, according to remarks delivered by the President. The event served as a moment of collective reflection on Latvia’s strength and resilience, particularly during a period often characterized by negativity.

“Right now, here in the Riga Palace, a well-known, but still special thrill is felt,” the President stated. “Today, entering the Feast Hall and seeing you, it is clear that it is very good. We see all around us how many strong people Latvia has.”

The ceremony specifically honored individuals demonstrating exceptional skill and dedication in their respective fields, with achievements gaining recognition both domestically and internationally. These honorees were presented as role models for future generations, inspiring children to aspire to greatness. “And I’m sure the kids are watching this ceremony too,” the President noted. “Those children who already see their new superheroes in this hall. Heroes you would like to emulate!”

The nation’s highest honors – the Order of the Three Stars (“Through thorns to the stars”), the Order of Viestura (“Be strong and fight”), and the Cross of Recognition (“For people of integrity”) – were highlighted as embodying core Latvian values. These awards, the President explained, represent a commitment to continuous improvement and a steadfast belief in a positive future. Each order, it was emphasized, symbolizes the culmination of a life’s work – encompassing dreams, dedication, and overcoming adversity.

A central theme of the President’s address was the importance of gratitude. “I have often said that we don’t say thank you enough,” the President acknowledged. “Today I will not make this mistake.” A broad spectrum of professions received heartfelt thanks, including teachers, scientists, doctors, artists, musicians, linguists, social workers, athletes, soldiers, border guards, police officers, and firefighters. Recognition also extended to the families and loved ones of the honorees, as well as international allies.

The President underscored the collective responsibility in shaping Latvia’s future. “All of us, each in our own way and each in our own place, are creating our Latvia together!” the President declared, calling for continued cooperation, mutual respect, and open communication.

Concluding with a message of hope and determination, the President urged citizens to approach the future with “will, self-confidence and determination,” working together with “a clear mind and an open heart.” The celebration culminated in a resounding call for a “Happy and bright…holiday!” and a spirited declaration: “Long live Latvia!”
