Oslo City Council Members Face Criticism for Prioritizing Football Celebration Over School Debate

Politicians in Oslo are facing mounting criticism after canceling their participation in a crucial school debate, reportedly to attend a celebration for the men’s national football team. The cancellations, announced shortly before the event, have sparked accusations of misplaced priorities and disrespect towards concerned parents and community members.

The controversy centers around the planned debate organized by “JA til BEGGE Ensjøskolene,” a campaign advocating for the construction of both a new primary and secondary school in the Ensjø district of Oslo. Liberal Party representative Anna Dåsnes and Conservative Party representative Bjørgulv Vinje Borgundvaag both abruptly withdrew from the debate, prompting strong reactions from local figures and activists.

Growing Concerns Over School Capacity

The debate was intended to address pressing concerns over school capacity in Ensjø, a rapidly growing area. According to prominent NRK profile Live Nelvik, “The children in my local area are like puzzle pieces, and the siblings end up in very different schools,” highlighting the strain on existing resources. Nelvik further pointed to a significant population increase in recent years, exacerbating the lack of schools, football pitches, and multi-purpose halls.

Nelvik and fellow critic Eivind Trædal, of the Green Party (MDG), were both present at a debate on Monday evening supporting the “JA til BEGGE Ensjøskolene” campaign. They voiced their dismay over the timing of the cancellations, particularly in light of reports that Dåsnes attended a celebratory event for the national football team at Oslo City Hall the same evening.

Accusations of Disrespect and Misplaced Priorities

Trædal accused the city council members of demonstrating “hugely disrespectful” behavior towards parents who have dedicated significant time and effort to advocating for improved school infrastructure. He stated that the cancellations sent a message that the concerns of local residents were less important than attending a celebratory event. “That the city council parties propose massive cuts in the city, and want to close schools and abandon important school developments is one thing. But the fact that they will not even stand up to defend their own policy towards the people it affects, and cancel at short notice, is all the worse,” Trædal wrote on Facebook.

The situation was further fueled by a post from Dåsnes on Instagram featuring the national football team with the caption “Guttaaaaaaaa.” This led to accusations of prioritizing “the possibility of a selfie with Haaland” over engaging with constituents on a critical local issue.

Defending the Cancellations: Negotiations as the Reason

Both Dåsnes and Borgundvaag defended their decisions, citing ongoing negotiations regarding the city’s school needs plan. Borgundvaag explained to Dagbladet that it was “orderly” for those involved in negotiations to refrain from public debate on the same matter. He also stated that he did not attend the World Cup celebration at City Hall.

Dåsnes echoed this sentiment, stating that her participation in the debate would have been “not orderly” given the ongoing negotiations. She emphasized that she had attended a public meeting on the issue in August and would have been happy to participate under different circumstances. Dåsnes also vehemently denied prioritizing selfies with Haaland, sharing a screenshot of her Instagram activity to demonstrate that she had left City Hall before the debate began.

Skepticism Remains

However, Trædal dismissed the explanation as “nonsense,” pointing out that a representative from the Progress Party, also involved in the negotiations, was able to participate. He argued that the cancellations were a matter of respect for local residents and a willingness to engage with voters even when making difficult decisions.

The incident raises questions about the priorities of Oslo’s city council and the importance placed on community engagement. As the debate over school infrastructure continues, the controversy surrounding these cancellations is likely to fuel further scrutiny of the decision-making process and the responsiveness of elected officials to the needs of their constituents.
