The future of River Plate midfielder Matías Galarza Fonda is now in question as Vélez Sarsfield has formally expressed interest and initiated negotiations for his transfer. A meeting between club officials is already scheduled, signaling a potentially swift resolution to the situation.
Shifting Landscape for Galarza Fonda
Just days ago, the prevailing sentiment suggested Galarza Fonda would remain with River Plate, at least until after the upcoming World Cup. His representative, Regis Marques, initially indicated a strong desire for the player to stay, stating to Paraguayan media outlet ABC Cardinal: “I think he will stay there, at least until after the World Cup. River wants him to stay, he has no problem with that.” However, the landscape has dramatically shifted, prompting a formal offer from Vélez and a scheduled meeting to discuss the details.
“There is an offer from Vélez and I know that there is a meeting today,” Marques confirmed in a dialogue with the Big Football program on AM 1080 radio, revealing the formal discussions are now underway. Marques has given the green light to advance negotiations, expressing that he “sees with good eyes that he has minutes,” suggesting playing time is a key factor in any potential move.
Gallardo’s Plans and the Need for Playing Time
Galarza Fonda arrived at River Plate during the last transfer window at the behest of former coach Marcelo Gallardo. Despite acknowledging the player’s current level hasn’t been optimal, Gallardo reportedly still believes in Galarza Fonda’s potential and wished to retain him within the squad.
However, the situation is complicated by the player’s limited opportunities for consistent playing time. While Gallardo intends to utilize him, a starting role is not guaranteed, and significant improvement will be required to break into the first eleven. A strong preseason performance could prove crucial in changing this dynamic. Notably, Galarza Fonda is currently the only left-handed midfielder in Gallardo’s squad, a factor that could weigh in River’s decision-making process, despite the differing characteristics of Lencina and Juanfer.
Previous Interest and Vélez’s Aggressive Pursuit
River Plate previously turned down a proposal from Brazilian club Botafogo for Galarza Fonda. Interest also surfaced from Paraguayan clubs Olimpia and Cerro Porteño, but their financial capabilities were insufficient to meet the 23-year-old’s salary demands. Vélez Sarsfield, however, has demonstrated a clear commitment to securing the midfielder, moving quickly to present a formal offer.
Vélez’s ambitions extend beyond Galarza Fonda, as they also aim to acquire Tomás Galván, currently on loan to Liniers until 2025. Meanwhile, River Plate has expressed interest in Maher Carrizo, a player they pursued in the previous transfer window. The recent acquisitions of Santino Andino and Tadeo Allende have positioned River to potentially explore a trade involving Carrizo. The possibility of a cross-trading arrangement between the two clubs remains open.
The coming days will be critical in determining Galarza Fonda’s future, with the outcome of the meeting between River and Vélez officials poised to dictate whether the midfielder will continue his career in Núñez or embark on a new chapter with the Fortín.
