Rivian expects to introduce point-to-point driving later this year as part of a push toward vertical integration.

The competition to deliver the best advanced driver-assistance system on the market is intensifying among automakers and software developers. When asked about its standing, Rivian Automotive’s in-vehicle artificial intelligence assistant launched on May 12, 2026, offered a glowing self-assessment.

While the AI bot’s evaluation carries an obvious bias, it reflects Rivian’s broader corporate ambition: to catch up to and eventually surpass Tesla’s driver-assistance capabilities while maintaining stricter safety guardrails. Based on hundreds of miles of testing in Michigan using a Rivian R1T pickup, Autonomy+ outperforms legacy systems like General Motors’ Super Cruise on highway terrain, yet it still trails Tesla’s FSD (Supervised) on nonhighway roads and complete point-to-point navigation.

How Rivian, Tesla, and General Motors Stack Up on the Road

The most significant operational dividing line between Tesla and Rivian lies in how their respective systems handle nonhighway streets controlled by traffic lights and stop signs. Rivian’s Autonomy+ successfully detects these roadway signals, but the vehicle does not act on them autonomously; instead, it issues alerts to notify the driver of upcoming intersections. By contrast, Tesla’s system handled every signal, interchange and exit ramp encountered over nearly 200 miles of driving across rural Michigan and downtown Ann Arbor.

No car currently available for purchase is fully self-driving or autonomous, meaning human drivers must always remain attentive and prepared to take over manual control immediately. Rivian relies on a sensor suite featuring at least 10 wide-dynamic-range cameras, five radars, and mapping data, with plans to incorporate lidar into the R2 model early next year. Tesla depends entirely on cameras and a machine vision system. Meanwhile, the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration intensified its investigation into Tesla’s FSD (Supervised) system following multiple accidents, including a fatal crash where the regulator stated the system failed to adequately warn the driver about limited visibility caused by sun glare or fog.

The Push for Vertical Integration and Point-to-Point Navigation

Rivian credits its rapid technological strides to an aggressive push toward vertical integration, which encompasses a new generation of vehicle software and advanced electrical architecture.

Philbin noted that Tesla’s system operates as a point-to-point network, representing the primary benchmark for Rivian as it develops interactions capable of managing the entire driving task from start to finish. Rivian anticipates rolling out point-to-point driving capabilities later this year.

Legacy automakers are also adjusting their competitive strategies. General Motors pioneered hands-free highway driving with Super Cruise, which debuted in 2017, but was slower to expand its capabilities beyond geographical expansions and automated lane changes. Ford Motor quickly matched GM on highways, but neither automaker currently offers hands-free driving on nonhighways. Both companies are developing eyes-off technologies that are not expected to reach the market until 2028.

Pricing Models and Financial Stakes for Automakers

Automakers and investors increasingly view advanced driver-assistance systems as vital growth markets capable of generating recurring service revenue. Piper Sandler analyst Alexander Potter highlighted the financial rationale behind these technologies in a recent investor note upgrading Rivian stock.

Potter added that as volume rises, Rivian should be better able to monetize software & services, highlighting vertical integration as a core commercial advantage.

Consumer pricing structures for these software packages vary across manufacturers, offering either upfront purchase options or recurring monthly subscriptions. Tesla prices its system at $99 per month. Rivian charges $49.99 per month or $2,500 for lifetime access. General Motors offers Super Cruise for $39.99 per month or $399 annually.
