Musical Legacy and Global Impact

Born Gaynor Hopkins, Tyler grew up in a council house in Neath and rose to international fame during the 1970s and 1980s, recognizable by her distinctive husky voice. She was discovered by talent scout Roger Bell in a Swansea club and released her debut single, Lost in France, in 1977. Her country-pop ballad It's a Heartache followed the same year, reaching number four on the UK singles chart and number three on the US Billboard Hot 100.

Tyler achieved her biggest commercial milestone in 1983 with the release of the rock anthem Total Eclipse of the Heart, which topped the charts in both the UK and the US and made her the first Welsh person to secure a US number one hit. The parent album, Faster Than the Speed of Night, also became her only UK number-one album. Throughout her decades-long career, she earned Grammy nominations for Total Eclipse of the Heart, the album Faster Than the Speed of Night, and the single Here She Comes, in addition to representing the United Kingdom in the 2013 Eurovision Song Contest with “Believe In Me”.
