Chennai: DMK and allied party MPs have submitted a petition to the President demanding the removal of RN Ravi from the post of Tamil Nadu Governor.

While the Tamil Nadu Governor’s speeches are causing various controversies, a petition signed by the MPs of the secular alliance party including the DMK was submitted to the President’s office yesterday. The petition states:

It is unconstitutional for a person appointed by the central government, not elected by the people, to oppose the state government elected by the people in policy and practice.

In 2021 elections, the people gave DMK the right to rule Tamil Nadu. However, the governor continues to speak against the government’s policies in a way that obstructs the work being carried out by the Tamil Nadu government and the Legislative Assembly.

In particular, the Governor is unnecessarily delaying the passage of various bills by the State Legislature. It is interference in state administration and legislative functions.

The Governor of Tamil Nadu is not doing his primary duty. The Co-operative Societies Amendment Bill has been pending for 10 months after it was sent for Governor’s assent. The NEET Exemption Bill was sent to him on September 13 last year. He delayed it for several months without sending it to the President. A petition was submitted to the then President and Union Home Minister regarding this. Even after that, the Governor did not send the Bill to the President but sent it back to the Legislative Assembly. This is in violation of the jurisdiction vested in the Governor. Due to this, a special meeting was convened and again the NEET Exemption Bill was passed and sent to the Governor. Such activities are not attractive to the Governor.

In Tamil Nadu, where people belonging to different religions, languages and castes live peacefully, the governor often speaks to divide the society. This is embarrassing for a government committed to secularism.

He has made various controversial comments such as glorifying Sanatana dharma, castigating Thirukkural, criticizing Dravidian tradition and Tamil pride. Such speeches of the governor have hurt the sentiments and pride of Tamils.

The thinking of the governor should be only in consideration of the welfare of the people. He has to abide by the decisions of the Chief Minister and Ministers elected by the people. The governor has violated the oath of office he took. He incites religious hatred and threatens the peace of the state. He has proved himself unfit to hold the office of Governor by his conduct and actions.

Therefore, to immediately remove RN Ravi from the post of Governor, the values of the Constitution should be preserved. This is stated in the petition.
