Rob Reiner and Wife Michele Found Dead in Apparent Homicide

A family statement confirmed the tragic deaths of acclaimed director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele, at their Los Angeles home. Authorities are investigating the case as a homicide, with initial reports indicating no signs of forced entry.

The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) discovered the bodies on Sunday afternoon, local time, but has not yet released the identities of the deceased pending notification of next of kin. A police spokesperson stated that a significant police presence was observed at the couple’s residence in the Brentwood neighborhood, responding to a call originating from within the home.

According to reports from TMZ, the 78-year-old Reiner and his 68-year-old wife, Michele Singer Reiner, were found with stab wounds, suggesting a knife was used in the commission of the crime. The investigation has reportedly focused on a member of the Reiner family, identified as the couple’s 32-year-old son, Nick Reiner. Sources cited by the New York Post indicate that Nick, a screenwriter, is currently considered a person of interest in the case, with a history of struggles with drug addiction and homelessness. People magazine also reported that Nick Reiner is under suspicion in connection with his parents’ deaths.

Rob Reiner first gained prominence as an actor in 1971, portraying Michael “Meathead” Stivic in the television series All in the Family. He later transitioned to directing, achieving critical and commercial success with films such as Stand By Me, When Harry Met Sally…, and A Few Good Men. Throughout his career, Reiner has received numerous Golden Globe nominations and an Academy Award nomination in 1993 for A Few Good Men. He also earned two Emmy Awards for outstanding supporting actor. Most recently, he made a guest appearance in the fourth season of the series The Bear.

Michele Reiner, a photographer, reportedly met Rob during the filming of When Harry Met Sally…. The couple married in 1989 and shared three children. According to TMZ, Michele is credited with inspiring her husband to alter the film’s ending to a more optimistic conclusion.

The Screen Actors Guild, representing 160,000 performers and industry professionals, issued a statement Monday praising Reiner’s legacy. “Rob Reiner is one of the most significant figures in the history of film and television,” said Guild President Sean Astin. “His impact on American culture cannot be overstated.” Reiner had been a member of the Guild for nearly 60 years.

Former U.S. President Barack Obama also expressed his sorrow, stating on X (formerly Twitter) that he and his wife, Michelle, were “deeply saddened” by the news. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass described herself as “heartbroken” by the tragic loss of Rob and Michele Reiner, acknowledging the director as a “dedicated political activist” who consistently “used his gifts in service of others.” Reiner was a vocal critic of Donald Trump and a supporter of Democratic causes.
