The los Angeles Fire Department responded to the Reiner residence in Brentwood, california, but first responders found a man and woman – later identified as Rob and Michele Reiner – already deceased at the scene.

Investigation and Arrest

Following the initial response, the deaths were investigated as potential homicides. Sources close to the family soon indicated that Nick Reiner was being questioned by the Los Angeles Police Department’s Robbery-Homicide Division in connection with the case. On December 15,LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell confirmed that nick Reiner had been taken into custody and booked on a murder charge, and is currently being held without bail.

A Family’s Grief and Remembrance

The Reiner family released a statement expressing their profound sorrow. “It is with profound sorrow that we announce the tragic passing of Michele and Rob Reiner. We are heartbroken by this sudden loss, and we ask for privacy during this unbelievably tough time,” the statement, shared with Variety on December 14, read.

Friends and colleagues also mourned the loss. Billy Crystal and Larry David were reported to have visited the Reiner home shortly after the news broke, a source confirmed to PEOPLE. Tracy Reiner,Rob’s daughter from his first marriage to Penny Marshall, expressed her shock, telling NBC News on December 15,”I came from the greatest family ever. I don’t know what to say. I’m in shock.” Rob and Marshall, despite their divorce in 1981, remained friends, and he maintained a close relationship with Tracy. The couple also shared son Jake and daughter Romy.

Nick Reiner’s History and Prior Struggles

Prior to the alleged involvement in his parents’ deaths, Nick Reiner had publicly discussed his long-standing battle with addiction. In a 2016 interview with PEOPLE, he detailed cycles of drug abuse and numerous attempts at rehabilitation, beginning at age 15. “If I wanted to do it my way and not go to the programs [my parents] were suggesting, then I had to be homeless,” he claimed, recounting approximately 17 stints in rehab and periods of homelessness.

Rob Reiner later reflected on his and Michele’s initial approach to Nick’s struggles, expressing regret in a 2015 interview with BUILD Series. “If your kid is going through rough times, [as] the parent, your main job is to keep your child safe. So I would do anything. At the end of the day, I know my child better than an expert does and I probably should have trusted my own instinct and that’s one of the things I did learn about the whole experience.” The pair even collaborated on the semi-autobiographical film being Charlie, which explored the challenges of addiction and family dynamics. Nick stated at the time, “That made me who I am now, having to deal with that stuff.”

Reported Dispute Before the Tragedy

Adding another layer to the unfolding tragedy, sources revealed that Rob and Nick Reiner reportedly engaged in a “big fight” the night before their deaths. According to two sources who spoke with PEOPLE, the altercation occurred at a holiday party hosted by Conan O’Brien on December 13. Prior to the dispute, a source alleged that “Nick was freaking everyone out, acting crazy, kept asking people if they were famous.”

The investigation into the deaths of Rob and Michele Reiner remains ongoing as authorities continue to piece together the events leading up to this devastating loss.
