The musician is said to have died on Wednesday surrounded by his family in Los Angeles after a long and difficult illness, according to his manager Jared Levine. He added that not long before his death, Robertson completed his last project, the music for the film Killers of the Blooming Moon directed by Martin Scorsese (80), with whom he often collaborated. The family has asked that in lieu of flowers, people send money to the Canadian Aboriginal Cultural Centre.
The Canadian band The Band, in which Robbie Robertson worked for many years, also collaborated with the musician Bob Dylan (82) – and even accompanied him on his famous tour in 1965 and 1966, when the singer switched to an electronic sound. The albums that The Band then released solo in the late 1960s, called Music From the Big Pink and subsequently The Bandstill belongs to rock classics today.
The band, which performed at the legendary music festival in Woodstock in 1969, consisted of distinguished personalities – in addition to guitarist Robbie Robertson, it was bassist Rick Danko (†55), drummer Levon Helm (†71) and keyboardists Richard Manuel (†42) and Garth Hudson (86). Although the musicians enjoyed great popularity, the members of the group, especially Manuel, struggled with drug and alcohol addictions.
The group’s final concert was filmed in 1976 by Martin Scorsese as a documentary The Last Waltz, which is considered one of the best film recordings of the concert, took place on Thanksgiving Day at San Francisco’s Winterland. The rockers last played with Ringo Starr (83), Eric Clapton (78), Neil Diamond (82) and Joni Mitchell (79). However, this document contributed to the end of the friendship between the musicians. The Band still got together without Robertson in the 80s, old grievances were apparently not forgiven, but without their leader they did not achieve their former successes. Manuel, who also tried an acting career and played, for example, in a comedy Let’s Get Laidhanged himself in a hotel room in Winter Park, Florida in 1986. The last surviving member of The Band is multi-instrumentalist (in addition to keyboards, he also plays the saxophone and organ) Hudson.
