In the Night, placed at the heart of the evening, sets the tone; it is undoubtedly Jerome Robbins’ most vibrant work. He watched over this piece with paranoid care: when he entrusted it to the Paris Opera Ballet in 1989, he demanded 189 hours of rehearsals, for 25 minutes of choreography. And demanded more. His obsession? Let the dance be an intimate, deep song, “not on the music but in the music”, serving the nuances of the feeling of love.
