Penn’s Ethan Roberts Dominates, Earns Multiple Player of the Week Honors
Table of Contents
A stellar week of performance has earned University of Pennsylvania senior guard Ethan Roberts significant recognition, being named player of the Week by both the Ivy League and the Philadelphia Big 5. He was also selected as the Lou Henson National Mid-major Player of the Week by CollegeInsider.com.
Recent Performances Fuel Accolades
Roberts’ awards stem from two commanding performances in recent city series matchups. Last Monday, he led the Penn Quakers to an 83-74 victory over Saint Joseph’s, delivering 31 points – 24 of which came in the second half – alongside five rebounds, two assists, and three steals. Four days later, he again topped the scoresheet, contributing 30 points and eight rebounds in an 84-68 win against Drexel, adding two assists and three steals to his tally.
Throughout the week, Roberts demonstrated impressive shooting accuracy, converting 19 of 33 field goal attempts (.576), including 5 of 11 from beyond the three-point arc (.455), and a remarkable 18 of 20 free throws (.900).
Historic Scoring Streak
Roberts’ consecutive 30-point games mark a rare achievement for the Penn program. He is only the second Quaker to accomplish this feat since Keven McDonald scored 35 against Tennessee and 32 against Ohio State at the 1975 Sugar Bowl Classic. The other player to reach this milestone in recent history was Jordan Dingle, who recorded 31 points in games against both Yale and Harvard during the 2021-22 season.
National Scoring Leader
Entering the week of Thanksgiving, Roberts ranks third nationally in scoring, averaging an impressive 24.6 points per game. He trails only PJ haggerty of Kansas State (28.0 ppg) and Terrence Brown of Utah (25.2 ppg), and slightly edges out fellow Ivy League competitor Cooper Noard of Cornell (24.4 ppg).
Upcoming Cathedral Classic
The Penn Quakers (3-2) will host the Cathedral classic this Friday through Sunday at the historic Palestra. The tournament will feature a four-team field including Penn, Merrimack, Hofstra, and fellow Big 5 member La Salle. Each day will consist of doubleheaders, beginning at 2 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and at noon on Sunday.
