Roblox Under Fire: teen’s Account Reveals Disturbing Exposure to Extremism and Abuse on Popular Gaming Platform

A Melbourne teen’s harrowing experiences on Roblox are raising serious questions about the safety of the popular online gaming platform, as concerns mount over its accessibility to predators and extremist groups.

A 16-year-old, identified as Ollie, has revealed a years-long exposure to deeply disturbing content on Roblox, ranging from pro-Nazi demonstrations to child pornography. Despite being marketed towards children, the platform has exposed him to a “steady stream” of harmful material, prompting calls for greater oversight and stricter safety measures.

Ollie recounted being exposed to “disgusting images” and content encouraging terrorism, pornography, and self-harm. He also reported multiple instances of adults posing as children attempting to initiate private communications on external platforms, leading him to suspect predatory behavior. “I was very suspicious in that way,” he stated.

Roblox has experienced significant growth in recent years, boasting roughly 111 million daily users as of late 2023, with an estimated 40% under the age of 13. It is the most popular gaming app among Australian children aged four to 18,making Australia the second-largest market for Roblox globally, behind the United States. The platform’s vastness, with millions of user-generated games experienced in a shared 3D virtual space, presents unique challenges for content moderation.

Ollie’s experiences included direct exposure to child sexual abuse material. He described an incident involving an eight-year-old user who displayed both Nazi imagery and child pornography. Despite reporting the user to Roblox, the issue was not resolved, with the individual reportedly creating a new account and continuing the harmful behavior.

The Managing Director of UK-based social research agency Revealing Reality, stated that his team quickly encountered disturbing behavior and conversations while exploring the platform. “You walk up to a group of avatars or players, and as soon as you get close you can hear what they’re saying,” he said. “A lot of the time you’ll hear … people mimicking sex acts, making jokes about sexual assault, talking about adults and children engaging in sex acts. It’s very normalised.” Revealing Reality’s research from April also highlighted the ease with which children could access games with sexually explicit content.

The concerns surrounding roblox come as Australia prepares to implement a ban on social media for individuals under 16, set to take effect on December 10. However, experts caution that age verification measures are easily circumvented.

Roblox has taken some steps to address safety concerns, including requiring age verification for access to certain games and boosting AI content moderation and parental controls. A Roblox spokesperson stated, “Our policies are purposely stricter than other platforms. We limit chat for younger users, we do not allow the sharing of images or video in chat or via our messaging functionality, we monitor all communications, and we deploy advanced text filters to block the sharing of personal details and inappropriate language.”

However, Mr. De Ionno likened these measures to “introducing age checks at the sex club whilst failing to check who visits the local playground,” highlighting the ease with which users can misrepresent their age. He noted that users can easily identify as adults to access inappropriate spaces while also being able to register as children.

Moreover, experts point to the platform’s design as being particularly attractive to extremist groups. Dr. Kaz Ross explained that Roblox is a “major path to recruitment for the far right,” noting that groups like “764” – a network targeting young people with self-harm content and violent nihilism – actively exploit the platform to reach new victims and direct them to less-moderated platforms like Discord.

The eSafety Commissioner has written to Roblox and 15 other companies indicating they may be covered by the new law forcing platforms to block under 16s. Roblox, however, has expressed disagreement with being included in the ban, leaving its compliance status uncertain.

The situation underscores the urgent need for robust safety measures and increased parental awareness to protect vulnerable young users in the rapidly evolving digital landscape.
