More than 300 Rohingya Refugees Arrive in Indonesia After Weeks at Sea

Over 300 Rohingya refugees arrived in Indonesia’s northern province of Aceh Bazar on Sunday, after enduring weeks at sea without food or water. The desperate journey from a refugee camp in Bangladesh to Indonesia was undertaken in search of a better life, but came at great risk and cost.

Each refugee reportedly paid the boat owner approximately 363 dollars (about Rs. 30,000) to make the perilous journey. The refugees, who fled their homeland in 2017 following a genocide by the Myanmar army, have been living in refugee camps in Bangladesh and Myanmar, where they face a hellish existence. Even those who remain in Myanmar are denied citizenship and freedom of movement by the government.

The dangerous sea journey to Indonesia is not uncommon for Rohingya refugees, who often make similar trips to Malaysia in search of a better life. This year alone, over 350 people have been reported drowned or missing at sea during these risky journeys.

The plight of the Rohingya refugees has once again come to the forefront, as their dangerous and precarious journeys continue to highlight the dire situation they face. The international community has been called upon to address the ongoing crisis and provide support and assistance to the Rohingya refugees.
