INTERVIEW – Olympic champion in 2021 in Tokyo, then world champion a year later in Cairo, the French swordsman is putting his title on the line in Milan this Wednesday, at the end of a more delicate season.
Romain, how do you approach these World Championships of which you are defending champion, but on which you arrive after a season undoubtedly below your expectations?
Romain Cannone : With great seriousness because it is the last straight line of a long season. In addition, it’s a bit like a stage of the Tour de France, we don’t necessarily look at the first 100 kilometers but rather the last 10 or 20, which are the ones that matter the most. These World Championships will be particularly important for the next Olympic Games in Paris because it is absolutely necessary to qualify the team. I have no doubt that we will get there and I am very positive. And on a personal level, I am a conqueror. Afterwards, was my season disappointing? Let’s say I was hoping to do better but it’s not possible to always win everything.
How do you explain your difficulties?
For me, this year has been a season of adaptation. I was watched more, more analyzed than before…
