Rómulo Mucho: new Minister of Energy and Mines

The mining engineer, born in Puno in 1956, succeeds Óscar Vera Gargurevich in the position.

Rómulo Mucho Mamani – born in Juli, Chucuito, Puno, on October 24, 1956 – is a Peruvian mining engineer, professor and politician. He was vice minister of Mines during the Government of Alejandro Toledo and congressman of the Republic in the parliamentary period 2000-2001.

Mucho Mamani studied Mining Engineering at the National University of the Altiplano of Puno and a postgraduate degree at the National University of San Marcos.

He also has studies in Senior Management at the University of Piura; Continuing Education studies at QUEEN’S UNIVERSITY, Kingston, Canada. He is also the 1981 winner of the Atlas Copco scholarship and the 1984 winner of the JICA scholarship.

Many have received recognition from universities and public and private institutions. Thus, in 2012, he was awarded the Order of Peruvian Engineering, the most prestigious decoration given by the College of Engineers of Peru (CIP), for his professional career. The same year he received the honorary distinction of Doctor Honoris Causa from the National University of the Altiplano of Puno.

Likewise, he is an Honoris Causa Doctor from the national universities of Tumbes, Puno and Daniel Alcides Carrión, Cerro de Pasco. And he has the “Presidents Citation” award from the US SME.

In July 2018, the National University of Central Peru awarded the distinction of Doctor Honoris Causa in merit for his institutional, academic and business career, and for his tireless work for modern mining as a support for the development of Peru.

He is a professor at the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos, and also offers professorships in his specialty at different universities in the country.

Mining career

He worked since the 1980s in various mines, including Tintaya, Regina, Málaga, Hochschild Mining and then in the company Cementos Pacasmayo, having 43 years of experience in this type of company.

He held his highest position in the Executive Branch as Vice Minister of Mines, between 2005 and 2006, during the Government of President Alejandro Toledo.

During the aforementioned period, Mucho participated in the facilitation, mediation and negotiation of socio-environmental conflicts that involved the companies Tintaya, Majaz, Las Bambas, Yanacocha, among others.

Likewise, he served as president of the Institute of Mining Engineers of Peru (Ingemmet) between 2012-2014, and congressman of the Republic between 2000 and 2001, being then manager of the canon law.
