Each of his exhibitions is an event. The Australian sculptor Ron Mueck is back at the Cartier Foundation in Paris, with hyper-realistic, monumental works that leave no one indifferent.

A tiny baby, larger than life, attached to the wall like a crucifix. A giant infant, a girl this time, barely out of her mother’s womb, tense face and clenched fists. Non-standard works based on silicone and fiberglass. Sculpted by the Australian Ron Mueck, they amaze those who discover his work. “I have rarely seen something so strong”, said a woman. This attention to detail is the hallmark of Ron Mueck. This 65-year-old self-taught former puppeteer never gives an interview.

Deaf violence

He takes months, sometimes years to finalize his works. Only 48 in 27 years of career. This installation, made for a museum in Melbourne, had never left Australia. It took two months to bring it to France by boat. In his studio on the Isle of Wight (United Kingdom), the artist drew and then shaped his latest creation using a 3D printer: three terrifyingly beautiful mastiffs, to exorcise a childhood fear. We find this muted violence in this work of clay and wax, a prelude to the death of a pig. These group scenes are a novelty in the work of Ron Mueck, an artist of intimacy and solitude.
