Ronaldo Eyes Lewandowski to Spearhead Al-Nassr’s Title Push, Manchester United Also in the Hunt
A potential transfer battle is brewing between Al-Nassr and Manchester United for Barcelona striker Robert Lewandowski, as Cristiano Ronaldo seeks to bolster his team’s attacking prowess with an “elite” addition.
The pursuit of Lewandowski comes after Ronaldo committed his future to Al-Nassr, signing a mega two-year contract reportedly worth £178 million (€205m / $237m) per year, and acquiring a 15% stake in the Saudi club, granting him significant influence over transfer decisions. Despite a remarkable individual goal-scoring record of 99 goals in 112 appearances, Al-Nassr’s team success has been limited to winning the Arab Club Cup since his arrival. A frustrating 2024-25 campaign saw them finish third in the Pro League, fall short in the Super Cup final, and exit the AFC Champions League in the semi-finals.
According to reports from Spanish source Fichajes, Ronaldo has directly urged Al-Nassr’s leadership to pursue Lewandowski, believing the Polish international can elevate the team to a new level and deliver much-needed silverware. “He sees Lewandowski as a key addition both on and off the pitch,” the report states, highlighting the potential for increased fan engagement alongside the veteran striker’s goal-scoring ability.
Lewandowski’s current contract with Barcelona is set to expire in June, leaving the door open for a potential free transfer. The possibility of acquiring the former Bayern Munich star without a transfer fee is particularly appealing to Al-Nassr. Recent player movement between the two clubs – Inigo Martinez’s move from Barcelona to Al-Nassr in August – could also play a role, with the defender potentially influencing Lewandowski to make a similar switch.
However, Al-Nassr faces competition from Manchester United, who are also reportedly keen on securing Lewandowski’s services. Reports in the English media suggest United view the 37-year-old as a “masterstroke” signing, with claims he previously expressed interest in joining the club during Sir Alex Ferguson’s tenure. United are seeking an experienced No. 9 to support young forward Benjamin Sesko, and Lewandowski is considered a top-class solution despite being in the twilight of his career.
Lewandowski is not the only Barcelona player linked with a move to Riyadh. In July, reports indicated Al-Nassr also had interest in Andreas Christensen. While Barcelona’s sporting director, Deco, appears to be planning for a future without Lewandowski, analyzing potential replacements, the club has yet to finalize a decision regarding his contract extension.
The potential arrival of Lewandowski at Al-Nassr would undoubtedly raise the profile of the Saudi Pro League, attracting further attention and investment. It would also create a formidable attacking partnership with Ronaldo, potentially transforming Al-Nassr into a dominant force in Asian football. The coming months will be crucial in determining Lewandowski’s next destination, with both Al-Nassr and Manchester United poised to make a strong push for the Polish superstar.
