Ronaldo vs Messi: Why He Doesn’t Rank with Legends

Capello Questions Ronaldo’s GOAT Status, Cites Lack of “Genius” Compared to Messi and Pelé

A debate continues to swirl around Cristiano Ronaldo’s place in football history, with legendary coach Fabio Capello asserting the Portuguese star doesn’t yet possess the qualities to be considered the greatest of all time (GOAT), a title currently held by players like Lionel Messi and Ronaldo Nazário (R9).

Ronaldo, a dominant force in the sport for over two decades, remains a prolific goalscorer, currently boasting 18 goals in 22 matches with Al Nassr this season. Despite his sustained success across four decades, questions linger regarding his overall impact on the game.

In a bold statement made in 2025, Ronaldo himself proclaimed himself the “most complete footballer ever,” surpassing even the likes of Messi, Pelé, and Diego Maradona. “I am the most complete footballer ever,” he stated in an interview. “While you might prefer Messi, Pele or Maradona, I stand out as the most complete, best player in history.”

However, Capello offers a contrasting perspective. The former AC Milan and England national team manager believes Ronaldo excels primarily as a goalscorer, lacking the broader vision and playmaking ability exhibited by Messi, Maradona, and the Brazilian Ronaldo.

“Cristiano is a great goalscorer and an extraordinary athlete, but he doesn’t have the genius of Messi, Maradona or Ronaldo Nazario,” Capello explained on the ‘Hat-Trick’ program on Egyptian television channel ON Sport. “The genius they possess is not in Cristiano. He cannot be compared to the three of them.”

Capello’s assessment centers on the holistic skillset of the other contenders for the GOAT title. Messi, Maradona, and Ronaldo Nazário were not only adept at scoring and dribbling but also possessed an exceptional understanding of the game’s nuances, allowing them to dictate play and create opportunities for their teammates. Crucially, all three have also lifted the World Cup trophy, a feat that remains elusive for Ronaldo.

The debate over Ronaldo’s legacy is likely to continue, fueled by his continued goal-scoring exploits and unwavering self-belief, but Capello’s analysis highlights the importance of considering more than just statistics when evaluating footballing greatness.
