Roscevac’s advocacy for the elimination of plastic waste in Gabon

December 26, 2023

The fight against pollution for the preservation of the environment and the sustainable management of waste in Gabon, particularly plastic waste, continues. A round table relating to advocacy for the elimination of plastic waste in Gabon was held for this purpose, this Tuesday, December 26, 2023 at the National Assembly. A round table initiated by the Network of Civil Society Organizations for the Green Economy in Central Africa (ROSCEVAC) with the support of the OIF and the AU.

Actors from civil society and environmentalists have made an appointment at the National Assembly of the Transition to “advocacy relating to the elimination of plastic waste in Gabon“. Nicaise Moulombi, President of the Network of Civil Society Organizations for the Green Economy in Central Africa (ROSCEVAC) notes that “the capital Libreville is increasingly threatened by the proliferation of urban waste due to population growth. Indeed, estimated at nearly 870,000 inhabitants in 2023, it could reach around 1 million in 2030, in 7 years. Projections show that the production of household waste would increase from 441,588 tonnes in 2021 to 906,800 tonnes in 2035. This creates a potential waste to be eliminated and recovered.“.

For the President of ROSCEVAC, optimal elimination and sustainable recovery would only be evident if the public authorities validate and adopt the law on waste management. Also, he proposes the closure of the Mindoubé open-air landfill. At the same time, Nicaise Moulombi requested public authorities to set up a waste recovery center. This implies, he concludes, that the State will have to make enormous efforts to make these processes feasible. “I therefore take the opportunity offered to me to draw your attention and your involvement in the process of adoption of the law on waste management, currently being examined in Parliament. Because this legal and regulatory tool will make it possible to take advantage of the economic value of waste, in particular plastic waste for which civil society advocates the creation of value chains through micro-projects led by young people.” he says to the Transition deputies.

Roscevac’s plea was welcomed by the National Assembly of the Transition via the Honorable Gabriel Mally Odjoua, 2nd Vice-President of this republican institution. “Your presence here in this room testifies to the permanent interest of our country in concerns relating to the protection of our biodiversity… As the Head of State recently recalled during COP28, beyond words and certificates of good conduct, our country must truly be encouraged and supported in its commitment to protecting our planet” he underlined in his welcome remarks.

It should be remembered for useful purposes that the advocacy aims to promote an inclusive national policy to eradicate the production, marketing and consumption of plastic in Gabon. Also, it is a question of identifying the contextual needs in prevention, awareness and adaptation of practices linked to the environment. Also, develop specific, measurable and realistic actions to support the establishment of an adequate legal framework. Plastic waste, particularly single-use packaging, represents the main vector of plastic pollution.
