The Russian side is ready to train an astronaut from the DPRK, as well as organize his flight into space, said Yuri Borisov, General Director of the Roscosmos state corporation.

“If necessary, we could train and launch a Korean cosmonaut, but this is no longer a question for us, but for the Korean side,” explained Mr. Borisov (quoted from “Interfax”).

He also emphasized that the cooperation program between Russia and the DPRK was not discussed in detail during the recent personal meeting between Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong-un. As Yuri Borisov clarified, as a rule, details of interaction in the space sector are discussed within the framework of a specialized intergovernmental commission.

On September 13, during a conference call, Russian Presidential Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov said that the Russian side is ready to send a North Korean astronaut into space, as reported to North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. “We talked about the fact that if the North Korean side wishes, a North Korean astronaut can be trained and launched into space,” noted the Kremlin representative. According to Mr. Peskov, in the very near future cooperation between Russia and North Korea will intensify “in all possible areas.”
