Erfurt – A big La Ola wave rolls past Mario Kraus (58), people cheer. For the Erfurt it feels like in the football stadium. He’s in his garden – but behind him is the legendary Steigerwald Gate…
Kraus has been a fan of the Rot-Weiss Erfurt football club for 44 years and has never missed a home game. “When they tore down my beloved marathon goal in 2015, I was heartbroken. It was the symbol of the Steigerwald Stadium,” says the social worker.

He took a few rocks with him back then. They now adorn his rock garden and are guarded by almost 120 colorful garden gnomes, some even wearing RWE jerseys.
But the longing for the marathon goal remained. That’s why Mario Kraus has now fulfilled a long-cherished wish: with his son Christian (36) he rebuilt the entrance to the Steigerwald Stadium in three weeks.

To ensure that he does not violate the statutes of the “Dahlia” allotment garden, he only used light material. Costs for wooden beams, styrofoam, plaster, glue and gauze: around 300 euros. He copied the construction from YouTube videos.

The miniature goal is now 4 meters wide, 2.90 meters high and 16 centimeters thick. The beams are anchored with ground spikes, and he built supports around the side of the gate.
His garden neighbors were immediately enthusiastic, only his wife Marion (59) was initially skeptical. “She was afraid that her cucumbers and tomatoes would not get any light in the raised beds,” says Kraus. “But enough sun shines through the windows.”

His marathon gate was inaugurated in the garden at the weekend. Around 300 guests came by, took lots of selfies in front of the styrofoam gate, cheered and toasted with a beer.
